Xylitol vs. Maltitol vs. Splenda vs. Other Sweeteners

What is the best and why? I know the obvious dangers of Aspartame (not sure if Splenda is aspartame or not?!) so I'm trying to avoid it other than in soft drink.

I'm just wondering what everyone's thoughts are. I bought some Xylitol the other day and I'm wondering how everyone incorporates it into cooking.

What are your tips on sweeteners.

Re: Xylitol vs. Maltitol vs. Splenda vs. Other Sweeteners

I use Xylitol because it is supposed to be the most natural and still reasonably easy to find. It measures spoon for spoon like sugar in cooking.

I have friends that use stevia, how do you find it in cooking. I've been thinking about getting some. Apparently in Japan they've stopped using aspartame in their diet drinks and are now using stevia. Australia and NZ are trying to follow suit, when it happens is another story.

Re: Xylitol vs. Maltitol vs. Splenda vs. Other Sweeteners

Im just in the process of testing out sweetners. Got some erythritol, xylitol and plan to get some stevia too. Have come to the conclusion that erythritol is definately not quite as sweet but not too bad. Am planning to play with the xylitol and stevia in the weekend.

Re: Xylitol vs. Maltitol vs. Splenda vs. Other Sweeteners

Where did you get the erythritol from and how much?

I think it goes something like 1 cup of erythritol (sp?) equals 3/4 cup of sugar. What most people do is use another sweetener as well.

We have a page now with my recommendations which are cheaper: erythritol and stevia

Re: Xylitol vs. Maltitol vs. Splenda vs. Other Sweeteners

      I use this

[they don't seem to exist anymore or at least their website is no longer]

      Just Like Sugar®

Just Like Sugar® is made from 96% inulin a dietary fibre obtained from chicory root.

The Inulin in Just Like Sugar® is not digested and therefore does not effect blood glucose levels. This makes it suitable for diabetics and those on a restricted calorie diet.Coffee now a fibre drink.

Every time you use Just Like Sugar® to sweeten a drink you make it a fibre drink.

Inulin acts as a prebiotic. Prebiotics are foods that feed the healthy gut bacteria. These bacteria improve digestion and gut health and aid in the promotion of normalizing stools. This is significant in reducing the risk of bowel and other gut related cancers.

Inulin has been shown to increase bone and muscle health, recent studies are suggesting that inulin helps the body to absorb calcium and magnesium.

Inulin has been added to dog foods as it’s effect reduces odours when a dog passes wind.

Inulin has been shown through it’s action on good bacteria, to help reduce the waste load of nitrogen in the kidneys and may therefore be beneficial for renal patients.
