View Full Version : When does ketosis kick in?
Hello all,
I've been doing the lowcarb thing for quite a while now, and I've found that when I stray close to 30g carbs a day, my ketosis starts disappearing.
However, I've been battling a long and hard battle with hormone imbalances and I got put on a doctor's diet that will hopefully correct the imbalance in my body. Strange thing is, the diet I'm on now consists of approx 80g carbs a day and yet I'm in ketosis! How can this be?
Any explanation?
17 views and no reply... I'm confused, help me here!
Sorry, I don't know. You could send a personal message to Jesper or Rossana, or email them?

Yes I thought I'd leave it for the more experienced to reply to aswell.
Apparently you can be in mild ketosis under 100g of carbs but usually it does'nt show untill it's really low. Maybe you should let your doctor know incase he wants to keep you out of ketosis.
Hello Sherrie,
Thanx for that, I think he might be aware that I'm in ketosis because he's given me advise like 'you'll get headaches the first few days' and 'drink lots of water to get rid of the waste products' etc, so I think his aim was a ketogenic diet. I'll mention it anyway.
I just found it interesting that previously I had to struggle to stay in ketosis at around 30g and now I can go so much higher! I was wondering whether it might have anything to do with one's biochemistry that doesn't want certain foods, as I have quite a limited list of foods I can eat, and not all protein either.
He did a blood test and analysed my composition prior to giving me the diet, so I guess this diet has been optimised for my biochemistry which means the food he's giving me is optimal for my body...that's all I can think...interesting anyhow!
Ofcourse I am absolutely wrapped that I'm still in ketosis because I wouldn't prefer it any other way! :D

Would love to know more if you allowed to tell ;)

Hi Katy Blue, I didn't havea clue about your question, but am very interested in what you are eating . So if it isn't breaking any rules, can you post a day's food so we can have a sticky:)
From reading Atkins for Life, it is possible to maintain weigh at 100g, but it doesn't mention still being in Ketosis.
What else would you like to know Sherrie? I certainly can tell!
Below is an example of what I eat, eg. what I ate yesterday:
Breakfast - 175g yoghurt
1 apple
Snack - 2 Vitawheat crackers
Lunch - 90 chicken (crumbed with 2 Paradise Lite crackers)
110g salad consisting of:
lettuce
tomato
celery
capsicum
red cabbage
Snack - 1 1/2 kiwi fruit
Dinner - 90g steak
110g veges consisting of:
cauliflower
capsicum
onion
zucchini
My veges and meat are very limited, eg. I can only eat certain seafoods and red meat, and only a list of about 15 veges.

Hmm interesting, it does look low in calories, fat and protien but your doctor is watching over you.
It looks like a form of detox diet like an anti candida diet.
No dairy except yoghurt I assume?, are you allowed many grains?
Do you have to follow this diet for long?
Let us know how you go.
Good Luck
Yeah, I guess it is quite low in just about everything...hihi! I'm feeling surprisingly good though, but I reckon that's the idea, getting my bod back in balance. I do eat cheese too, but that's the only dairy. I'm only allowed mozzarella, Philladelphia or cottage cheese, no other cheese.
Amazing thing is, I generally struggle with sluggish intestines on the normal LC WOL, but with this one, I have no problem, even though the fiber content is about the same!
The only grain I'm allowed to eat is a max of 5 crisbreads a day, no less than 2.5 hours apart. Other thing is, I'm not allowed to mix my proteins.
No, this diet will only carry on for about 4 - 6 weeks and then I'll get a refeed. Geepers no, I won't be able to carry on with this for any longer than that...:p

Philidelphia, you mean cream cheese?
Some anti candida diets allowed some fruit and some cheese (ones that ar'nt fermented).
Good luck with it, I'm really interested in how it helps you.
Yep, the cream cheese. Will keep you posted in my diary Sherrie, thanx for your input!;)

Well you said you were having trouble getting into K!!! ;)
Did anyone read the huge thread on the low carb forum - now on no carb forum by bear. It was very interesting. He mentions that ketones will not be detected in your urine when you become keto-adapted in about 3 weeks.

Snez that is bull, I say that because I was in keto for many months when I first started, I measured all the time and it was almost always a dark shade of purple!
It may happen for some but for him to just say it will not be detected in your urine after 3 weeks is bull...

I've read all the replies to the initial post, but am still unsure of the answer!! Such a newby....... Would it be fair to summarize that ketosis will kick in from (poss) around day 2 or thereabouts?

Yep, especially if training. I always say 3 days to be safe.

I visited my MT advisor yesterday (discussing my diet and tweaking my MT)and was asked why I thought I was in ketosis, I responded because my ketostix (pink result) tell me i am - I was then informed that it takes years for a person to reach a state of ketosis. Then I must have a faulty batch of stix! Strange....

Sue your MT advisor then is not very knowledgeable in this area to say the least. Its a shame your not in Sydney as Rosanna would be much better for you.
"Takes years for a person to reach a state of ketosis"
- what the!!! I've never heard that before.
