View Full Version : Why go back to day 1 ?

I was reading a post on another forum & I think I've seen it here somewhere too, where if they 'fall off the wagon' they have to go back to day 1 of induction.

Why is that? I thought the whole point of induction was
1. get you into ketosis
2. teach you which foods to eat etc

But, after 48 hours you're in ketosis (well some are) ... so why go back to day 1 of induction if you've already done induction?

BTW I haven't fallen .... yet :p

I think its because you need two weeks of being in K for your body to switch over to burning its own fat primarily *shrugs* or something like that??

When someone falls off the wagon they are no longer in ketosis.

In fact it may take you 3-7 days to get back into ketosis and working properly again.

Sorry, still doesn't make sense to me.

On TF you were in K after 48 hours ... & that was with around 120g carbs.
I was in K after 48 hours on Induction ... I didn't check it before that.

So, providing I eat low enough carbs to stay in K then I should be burning fat

So then if after falling off the wagon, just eat low enough carbs to get back into K then back into whatever you were eating before ....

I think I'm missing something here

I personally don't bother with induction *waits for the sky to fall on my head*:D because I do go into ketosis really easily.

I believe the idea behind going back to day one of induction is because "falling off the wagon" doesn't just happen...something led to it...and that something was probably the foods someone has been eating...so return to day one of induction and go from there again.

Does that make sense?

PS I don't call having a piece of cake "falling off the wagon," but eating a whole pack of biscuits would be, in my eyes.

Thank you Annelies ... yes that's exactly the way I was feeling too.

I stuck to induction exactly as written for the first week ... & the second week I've been trying bits & pieces ... nothing major .... a few strawberries etc

I've gained 500g overnite ... but then I also lost 1.1kg overnite last week, so I'm not too concerned about that .... but I'm still in ketosis ... so whilst experimenting I'm bound to find something that will throw me out of ketosis, but I couldn't really see any point of going back to day 1 if I'm back in ketosis within 48 hours (rambling)

Thanks

Depends on what context we're speaking. If its for someone on their first 2 week induction and they cheat during it, yes start again if not (in your first 2 weeks) then pick up where you left off unless everything got away with you resulting in the cheat like Annelies described.

I have seen mentioned in low carb studies that it takes around 4-6 weeks for your body to fully make the adaption to a fat burning metabolism I have also seen in VLCD studies mention of it taking 2 weeks before muscle preservation begins, granted Atkins isn't a VLCD but these VLCD's are typically low carb or lowish like TF and so low in calories to induce ketosis anyway.

And then you have cravings etc...

If having a few strawberries takes you out of ketosis, then I'll be a monkey's uncle.:D

I remember having to add in nuts in my second week, way back when, because I was having leg cramps and headaches and hadn't learnt about supplementing with the right minerals like potassium and magnesium. I remember feeling like I was cheating, but I kept shedding weight.:)

strawberries have kicked me out no worries - I find the tiniest things throw me out and mostly they are things I don't expect

According to the keto-stix - the strawberries haven't thrown me out ... but I have gained 500g
It could be gone by tomorrow tho - my weights usually all over the place

Another question:

I was reading the next part of the Atkins book & it says that to add 5g carbs/week ... (skip a bit) until the keto stix no longer registers.

But I can't see in the book (or I missed it) where it says if the increase in carbs has any impact on weight loss

I'd assume that if I increased from 20g to 30g that I wouldn't lose as much weight ... is that correct?

Also, (apart from me at the moment) can you gain weight whilst still in ketosis?

Damsel isn't it TOM time?

Tom time and Ovulation time are big weight gainers, its just water retention.

Weight loss can slow down as carbs increase, some people find they lose better with a little extra carbs though, depends really. Basically you add in 5g increments each week until weight loss stops then you go back 5g

TOM came & went in 3 days ... very painful but not much of a loss. I have no idea anymore when I ovulate or when it's due cos of the implant. My weight fluctuating several kg in a week is nothing new :(

But when the weight loss stops / weight gains (disregarding plateauing (sp)could you still be in ketosis ... or would you definately be out of it?

Generally (and I use that loosely) people don't tend to gain weight in ketosis, However, you can, particularly if from the smarter gender ;) gain weight/stall through water retention, mainly because of hormones especially around TOM or during the first few months of weight loss. When did TOM finish?

I rarely show on the sticks, and can't really go above 20 g carbs, but that does depend on the amount of exercise I do. If I'm really going for it exercise wise I'll show a tad of purple, but still can't increase the carbs above 30g.

My last TOM I put on 3kgs , I have an inplant too, so usually just cycle ie PMT & fluid retention, however this time I had a nasty visitor & a 3 kg weight gain :( Not too bad considering the last visit was about 18 months ago.

So, basically I'm on induction the whole freakin time

Sherrie - TOM finished Sunday

Essie - awwww that's what I was afraid to hear!!!!

Scales show I've gained another 500g (that's 1kg in 2 days) Stix show today im no longer in ketosis .... yet I've done no different from any other day ... no fair !

My clothes are definately looser tho

Strange, chart it on a calendar and see if it forms a pattern. Hows your water intake? no changes there?

Do you measure?

damsel

Yeah thats a good idea !

Still drinking about 8 glasses a day ...

I haven't measured since the first time I got sick on TF .... I know it's less - my waistband is very loose!

My 'official' weighin is Friday ... I'll measure then

I am hedging my bets you are suffering from some hormonal water retention.

Just remember it is just water and will go, you should still be losing fat :)

Just a P.S. I'm a short arse so I think that's why I can't increase. I'm also insulin resistant - sure of that.

I'm 5'5" ... just average I guess.
Have no idea if I'm insulin resistant or not .... have never really been into dieting until recently & this is all so new!

But, I'm now pretty sure that the stix were accurate ... I have the most awful headache which I get when going back into ketosis (the kind that painkillers just don't do anything for) .... dunno what threw me out though ...I've been really good !
