Smile Hi all, I'm new here!!

Hi all, my name is Janelle and I have been searching the net all night to find inspiration on how to lose weight!!! Well what attracted me here was all the inspiring stories about everyone's progress and also i suppose to find out more about low carb eating plans. I have always believed that a balanced diet and exercise would be the thing to work for me, and even though this has as yet not happened i still think this way, so yes i am a bit of a sceptic, but everyone here seems to be getting results so wanted to know more basically!!! Low carb's would probably be the best thing for me as i seem to have an intolerance to bread and pasta (they give me bad cramps!!!) but at the moment i am intending to go back to the good old weight watchers on monday and start an excercise routine (fingers crossed ...lol). It is soooo depressing sometimes because it seems to be able to lose weight always costs extra in my budget (ie. joining WW, buying supplements/vitamins) this is why i usually just try to eat a balanced diet with lots of fruit and veges. Anyway am interested in hearing more about the low carbs, and was wondering if i am not actually doing that eating plan can i still chat on here as at the moment my main problem is motivation (where has it all gone) and i think by being able to share with people having the same weight issues would be beneficial to me. Anyway i have bored you all to tears long enough, goodluck all and goodnight!!

    Welcome Janelle,

You need to do whatever motivates you. Obviously you're more focussed on exercise (like most people here) but I've managed to shed kgs without too much of it.

You'll find this forum really focussed on low carbing. There's actually some WW converts here if you have time to read their stories.

When you're ready it will all come naturally to you. You already know your body is sensitive to bread and pasta and understanding how it reacts to sugar in all it's forms is just education, too.

There's a great thread on getting started set up by Sherrie and you can always try to borrow books (preferably Atkins) from your local library or try their website.

    All the best.

    Welcome Jeanelle

We are all after the same goals, how we get there is up to us. We are all individuals and are welcome regardless.

Even doing low fat there is still plenty you can learn from low carb that you can apply to your weightloss plan.

For instance sugar is a big no, no for any diet. And although a little controversal fruit should be limited rather then unlimited.

Now I'm not saying you shouldn't eat it at all like us but to limit it.

Anotherone is high GI versus Low GI. Your best bet eating low fat style would be to stick with low GI type foods (eg brown rice, sweet potatoe, oats etc...)

Heres a fantastic link to help you with that aswell:

And also heres a link to Atkins site:

    Good Luck Janelle

    Thumbs up

Thanks Sherrie and Annelise, all very informative and interesting. And as you say different things work for different people just gotta find what works for me!!! oh yeah and stick to it (that's the main problem). I've been focussing on excercise alot as i am a very lazy person, which i hate being!!!! So am trying to increase my activity level as i know in times where i have done this before the weight starts to fall off.
I'm doing a human biology minor at uni and have done heaps on all the fructose and anabolism, catabolism etc. and sometimes it makes it hard to change your mind set as in the courses we do we learn all about ketosis and ketoacidosis and how ketoacidosis can be damaging, so it makes it quite interesting to me that the low carbs sets this up to happen, i suppose that is an area i would be worried about, though from what i have read here i believe that is what the 'ketosticks'are for, to measure the levels etc. ?
It's funny how with what i am studying (Bachelor science, Psychology) i have psychoanalised myself many a time and i know the problems but cant seem to fix them or more correctly find the motiviation to fix them!!!! It is very frustrating. Well thanks again for your answers. Cheers Janelle

    Hi Janelle,

I would say don't try to analyse yourself too hard. Just try to make yourself happy. The best word to remove from your vocabulary is 'should'. That way you won't have any regrets

Have you come across glyconutrients in your studies? I'll be picking your brain soon

Quote and link from the Atkins site

Confusion about ketosis often comes from people mistaking it for ketoacidosis, a condition found in Type I diabetics; this occurs when a person's blood sugar is out of control and he or she cannot produce insulin. No doctor should have trouble differentiating physiologic ketosis, which you will experience while doing Atkins, from ketoacidosis. Further, since people are often overweight specifically because of an overabundance of insulin, it is essentially impossible for them to be in ketoacidosis.

hi janelle, welcome! i just wanted to point something out here, that if bread and pasta give you cramps, have you considered that you might be gluten sensitive or have coeliac's disease? not trying to look for problems where there aren't any, but it is worth considering. here's some links:

    http://www.foodintol.com/celiac.asp
    http://www.coeliac.org.au/

good luck with WW. i'm not trying to convert you but i always felt hungry on a low fat diet. it's a thing of the past now!
    cheers, sam

    go hard...or go home
