    Smile Hello from Tasmania

    Hello Everyone,
I am new to this site, and really so pleased to have found one that is Australian.I have a few health issues and have been advised by my doctor to follow a Low Carb program, but to allow fibre as I have just been diagnosed with Diverticular Disease.and from being on steroids for many years I have devoloped Candida,(yeast overgrowth) which I have been told could be whats making it hard for me to lose weight.I am also a Type2 Diabetic.and have an allergy to Salicylates.(Aspirin)which to my surprise are in so many fruits and vegies

(I sound like a real old crock, but I am a loving caring old Crock

I would love to hear from anyone who suffers from any of these illnesses and hear what sort of program they follow.I think I need to find a healthy balance that allows me a bit of whatever it is a need.

I look forward to your comments.

    Hi Maureen, welcome

Sherrie will probably be along in a bit, she'll know about salicylates (and lots of other things!)

    Welcome Maureen

Great to see someone from Tasmania, Malcolm won't feel so lonely now

I had to do a failsafe diet with my daughter so I am familiar with veggies and salicylates, unfortunately it cuts out a lot of low carb fibrous veggies!!!

But brussel sprouts, celery, swedes and cabbage are both low in salicylates and carbs. Did you ever get tested to see if you have any problems with fructose/fructans? you take a breath test after having some fructose, similar to a glucose challenge test but with your breath instead of blood.

If fructans are okay then you have leeks, spring onions, chives, green beans and pears.

Chokos are also low in salicylates and carbs

I am thinking psyllium husks would be a good idea but can't remember if they contain salicylates or not so check first. Make sure to drink extra water with them though as they soak up water like a sponge.

Welcome Maureen, you'll certainly get lots of support here

I have had candida and still have to keep on top of it to this day.
Have you been checked for leaky gut?? That is one of the more horrible things that tends to happen with candida overgrowth.

It tends to make losing weight alot harder than normal, so be determined, it will come off.

The funny thing is, in failsafe circles (e.g. elimination diet where you cut out salicylates, additives and amines) they associate candida with salicylate intolerance. E.g. they claim that salicylates cause candida overgrowth rather then sugar. Maybe they both do?

All I know is when I first put Maya on this diet she came down with really bad thrush in the mouth, not good when your breastfeeding! Apparently this is a common symptom of salicylate withdrawal and sure enough after a couple of months it was completely gone.

    Re: Hello from Tasmania

    Hello everyone,
Thank you so much for the lovely welcome,I appreciate all of the advice and am prepared to do anything to make myself feel better.
I find it interesting that being on low Salicylate diet caused , and the Thrush in the mouth is awfull, makes me feel so unwell.
I have suffered with a bad intolerance for 20 yrs,and had attacks of swollen tongue and lips at least 3 times a week.I was a real nervous wreck as after so many tests I was told they couldnt find anything.
in Jan 2007 I had a bad attack, and my normal dose of steroids (50grns Prednesdone) didnt work, I was rushed to hospital and given Adrenalin injections as well as Antihistimine.I was lucky that the Doc on duty recognised what I had and said Angeo Edema ,I was so happy to know it had a name and I cried and cried. he said it was intolerance to Salicylates (Aspirin)
I was put on an elimination diet and the attacks gradually reduced, and when I did get them it was a much milder attack.I have put on 50kg over the years of being on steroids and I stll get mild attacks of Hives if I am not carefull.
I have a very painfull mouth at the moment, it feels like its ulcers, but I am trying to follow the low carb eating ,as well as watch I dont get constipation problems to agrivate the Diverticular disease.
I am so happy to have found this Group.

    Hey Maureen, Welcome

I am a type 2 diabetic which is now well and truly under control thanks to LC. My daughter is also Failsafe so I tend to try and find meals that suit us both - makes life easier for me!

    Hello Shez,
I am feeling a bit better today, and I must admit that LC eating is very satisfying,I am not at all hungry.I am still having 60grms of carb a day, thats allowing me to have fibre, but I would be interested to know how many carbs a day could I still get a steady weight loss .and is it essential to do the 2 week induction as on the Atkins program?
I am going to Qld on April 29th to see my kids and grandies, and would be so happy to lose a few kg before then, and also be able to stay on eating the same way while I am there.I will be away 4 weeks.
I hope everyone is having a great week.

    Re: Hello from Tasmania

I can't speak for everyone but for me personally 60grams carbs is a lot, I would not lose anything on that amount. I doubt that I would be off the diabetes meds either.
I stick to 20gms but I am not religious about it. If I go over a touch so be it
If I eat all my veggies I find I don't need extra fibre but if I do I take Metamucil (the no sugar one)
I'm averaging a loss of around a kilo a week doing it this way but the meds do tend to help you hold onto those unwanted kilos I try and counteract that by going to the gym and increasing my incidental exercise.
Feel heaps better for it too

Maureen induction is not essential, but if you are experiencing lots of sugar addiction it can be very helpful to kick that in the butt. Are you losing at all on 60g? Do you exercise?

    Re: Hello from Tasmania

I dont take meds for being type2 Diabetic,I keep my sugar levels down with diet, but I have problems with being allergic to Salicylates,I will have to see if Metamucil has any in it, and if not .
I will try cutting down on the carbs and having that.I do have cabbage and brussel sprouts, green beans.but it still doesnt seem to be enough to stop be being constipated.and the attacks of Diviticulitis get so painfull.
I am prepared to try anything to lose weight as well as feel better in other ways also.

    Thank you for your reply.
