Unhappy New to this whole site and looking after myself for a change?

    Hi all,
I am following advice from my Dr. who suggested lowering my carbs in my diet may be the solution to a number of health problems. All my kids are sports mad, and our food tends to be low fat and hi carb, but she suggests it is doing me more harm than good. Currently 45, 92kg and 174 cm tall, according to a couple of BMI thingies I am obese, but wear usually size 14 (or a 12 if I suck in a long way and dont try to breath!) I walk on average 1klm 4 times a week, but am still bigger than I would like. We haven't set a goal weight, but just gonna take it as it comes (off hopefully)Found the site through google and have been reading my eyeballs off for a couple of hours now. You all sound great and supportive and I look forward to more. My biggest challenge is going to be finding substitutes for my favourite pasta, water crackers and Pringles, and drinking water in large quantities instead of living off caffeine..........I too lost weight (heaps) on the stress induced "my ex is a real toerag" diet 18 months ago, but it has all come back. This is my first attempt ever at anything like this, so please forgive my rambling.

    Hi Sandra

Welcome to POH...this is such a wonderful sight you'll love it here ..probably too much though I sometimes need prising away from the pc and remember I have a house hold to run....

Have you go any plan to work to?

Sherrie our Moderator is not here at the moment her PC is down otherwise she would have been the first to answer your post...she has a wealth of knoweldge so she would be the person to follow up with once she gets back.

Well goodluck and look forward to seeing you lose..

No plan yet, just a list of what to limit and what to avoid altogether and what to limits in "free foods" lists.

Thanks heaps for all the welcomes, am past day one now. Achievements? 2 cups of coffee instead of 6 ( I drink it black with nothing in it) Soda Water instead of Diet Pepsi. Am having a few probs with fats - cant stand them, but olive oil is my friend. Dr has got me on fish oil tablets, washing them down with gallons of water. Trips to the loo have increased 200%. Hmmmm. Dr has advised me to cut the caffiene out gradually or i will end up with giant headaches. Am avidly reading recipes and other goodies on this site ( Ah well, I can catch up on work another day!)

Even found an avatar that suits ( We have 6 cats, 3 dogs and 11 indian ringnecks, so had to be animal based)

How do I get that weight ticker thingy so I can keep track?, I dont own scales, but am getting weighes once a week/fortnight at my Dr appointments.

Enough rambling for now. Thanks again all for making me feel welcome.

    Welcome Sandra

    Where is Bribie Island?

What a smart Doctor you have!

You will be surprised at how quickly you can get over having pasta and rice but that said I have been replacing it with zucchini lately and I am loving it. This week already I have had tuna mornay and another cheesy pasta type dish with ham and broccoli both using zucchini and they were yum

Crackers, we have some low carb recipes in the recipe section and regarding caffeine is you usually have coffee, you can have decaff.

Are you following a particular plan?

Wow I wish I could drink my coffee like that!!!

You will get used to the higher fat intake, just up it gradually.

I actually have the signature option disabled initially when you register, this is in place to ward off spammers whom love to spam their sites in their signatures, so nothing personal I just find spam can really degrade a forum. I used to enable it early for people with Australian ips but we have been having spammers from Australia lately too so I stopped that. You will find the option appear as you get to know everyone around the forums, doesn't take long.

Re: New to this whole site and looking after myself for a change?

Bribie Island is just above Brisbane(Queensland) - almost on the Sunshine Coast the only Moreton Bay island connected to the mainland by bridge.
No definate plan take it as it comes and communicate with Dr!. Been collecting ideas from around the web, and amazed at how many recipes I have actaully found in my collection of cookbooks ( it is a disease - I like to read cookbooks, doesn't mean I actually ever use them). Found this to be the friendliest, most informative site on the www. ( and Aussie as well) Looks at everything from all sides and different opinions. Asked Dr if I should go for T Ferguson as one here on the island and she told me in no uncertain terms not to do Meal replacement substitutes of any form. This seems to be backed up by communications here in forums ( by people with similar medical things eg: Bi Polar). I am a total mental and physical train wreck at the moment. She (dr) Recommended I read Atkins, so have requested from library ( eldest is a librarian so she will probably bring me home a container load of books) before I actaully spend money.

Biggest challenge is going to be doing meals that cover all our needs - the sporties, the librarian and their muvver. We live on a lot of veges, so thats the easy bit. Son works after school at a butcher, so great for getting meat cuts to suit. Eggs are making a big comeback in my diet - instead of toast!

I really should stop now before I drive you all nuts. Sorry. never let a net nerd on a forum - they just wont shut up.
