Thumbs up yes another 'once more into the fray' beginner

    Hello

I started low carb again about a month ago, so far lost 2.2 kg but noticing loss in waist measurement and increase in energy. What got me back was reading Gary Taubes Good Calories Bad Calories, very well reserched but a bit of a slog if you arent interested in the science of it all - LOL He is putting out a paper back condensed verion which should be easier to digest for those who dont really care for extended research.

Well about a month ago I started Eat Fat Loose Fat by Sally Fallon and Mary Enig, but the 2 tablesppons of cocnut oil was too much fro me - so it kind of wasnt happening. If you take that time out, I've only been low carbing for about 2 weeks. And drinking wine still in the first 10 days of those two weeks - but I am getting there. Bit by bit.

I am glad to find an Australian site, thank you Sherie and moderators for making this available for us.

What led me to this site was the Tony F shake diet, my sister in law has just started and I wanted to learn what she was on, see if the ingredients were safe etc, and what I found here horrified me. I have sent her emails of hair loss and gall stone stories, but I trust she will fall off the waggon soon enough, she is not a low fat person.

A few years ago I went low fat (before I started learning about nutrition - by researching cholesterol initially would yu believe) for about a year - the Simply Too Good To Be True books and fell into a deep depression. Since then I have discovered that depression can be exacerbated by low fat diets. It was pretty bad and am just coming out of it now and in the last few months.

Result is I am the heaviest I have been for many years (like 15) and as the spectre of menopause looms I am determined to shed these excess kilos.

Low carb has worked well for me before but even though it is early days I am finding it hard to shift this time. Does anyone else have that expereince? I am happy to stay with it, because I figure it took me a couple of years to put it on, it may well take a few years to get it off again. But I am finding I need to go zero carbs to do it. I know this is not an issue healthwise, as long as there is at leat 33% fat (animal etc) with it, and I am quite happy with it at present, though I can see it could get boring. Especially watching Nigella Lawson cook donut toat on TV - man that got the carb claws going! Generally though, I am not a 'sweets' person, I can take it or leave it. But I love my milk - sigh!

The other thing I have found during my life is that beer is my worst enemy. I can keep the weight off if I keep off the beer. Alas - I do like a coldie on a hot day!

Im jumping about a bit here, but back to the beginning, what I saw when I came looking for TF answers impressed me, so I decided to join.

I have 25 (22.8) kg to loose, and I am confident I can do it.

    Cheers Helga

    Hi Helga

Welcome! I am new to the site as well and agree that its great to find an Australian low carb forum.

I havent had any trouble second time around with losing weight on low carb though so not sure what is happening there. Maybe you could try going on induction again to kick start your weight loss and make sure you are in the weight loss burning zone.

Good luck with your journey - you definatly can do it!

Re: yes another 'once more into the fray' beginner

    Welcome Helga

I lost my weight back in 2002 but mid 2004 I fell pregnant whilst having lots of hormonal issues though somehow managing to maintain my weightloss then, I was diagnosed with chronic fatigue but boy did I put on weight during my pregnancy, I went from bouncing between 55-56kg to the early to mid 80s and I did not eat for two!

Anyway, I did lose most of that but I am still up a little from goal I even started to go up a little more last year as my hormones started going yucky again (pregnancy and BF seemed to settle it down). But I am having a heck of a time trying to get rid of it this time around. All low carb does is maintain it no matter how good. I am seeing a doctor now to try to figure it all out, he suspects thyroid and adrenal problems so hopefully I will get somewhere soon!

Anyway, reason I am mentioning it is if you're having trouble, make sure to read up on thyroid and see if any of it makes sense to you. If you suspect it does, go grab a thermometer and start checking your temperatures. It is very common in women and then when you consider all the women that go by undiagnosed and untreated for various reasons like stupid blood tests (instead their given anti-depressants or statins!), it is much, much, more common again. We have a thread on it here with links to lots of information: Thyroid 101

    Thanks Sherrie

I'll keep that in mind. I did look into it a while back and suspect that I might be mildly underactive regards thyroid, (kelp tablets took away the bags under my eyes first time ever) - but never followed up. If I'm still slow then I'll consider it again.

Judging by the liquid output though, I'm on the right track now, fingers crossed!

Doing your temperatures will let you know if your metabolism is under par, you can buy the thermometers really cheap from a chemist.

    Good luck!

Welcome Helga. You will soon feel the benefits health wise of your low carbing. My eyesight and oily hair cleared up before I started losing weight. Just keep going with it.

Thats intersting ScrappyKat about the eyesight, I could swear mine is getting worse, in fact I was thinking about going to check at the optometrists for new glasses for reading. Maybe it is just age!

Hadn't noticed so much about the oily hair, but you are right, it is less oily. Also I normally have a coldsore with TOM but not this time.

I have lost 3.8 kg now, slow but sure. I feel it is working better since going ultra low carb. So I am persevering with it, I am not hungry and If it was just me to cook for, - easy - having to cook for hubby and the occasional visitor makes it hard, I feel guilty at giving them low carb. Oh well, I'll just have to muddle through!

    Thanks for all your welcomes.

    Cheers Helga
