Shock Value - Extra Skin and Gastric Bypass

Today I turned on foxtel to the lifestyle channel and there was a show on called Supersized Kids (i think it was called that)

But anyway this show I recorded and have kept to watch if I start to go off track.

There was a story of a 16 year old girl who was morbidly obese and getting Gastric Bypass with her mother who was also morbidly obese. (I hate that label!)

It showed the actual operations, inside and out of the two ladies. Seeing all the fat attached to the organs and the Doctor was good and explained what he was doing throughout the operations.

Both ladies had a great success with wieght loss and interviewed several months later looked fantastic.

But at what cost? To never be able to eat food normally again, and to be in so much pain. I looked into it before starting BT when my GYNO suggested I look into it. I do have a friend who had it done and was talking to me about it, but I can not afford it. Thankful that I can not becasue after reading all the facts and seeing what happens ...

The other lady featured on the show was a 22 year old who had worked hard for 12 months eating write and going to the gym everyday. She lost (I think) 8 stone?

She had so much extra skin on her body that the Dr said it was the worst he had ever dealt with. Poor thing had no boobs just flaps and the extra skin was like nothing I had ever seen before.

They too showed the operation, showed them peeling her skin off, cutting the unwanted amounts and sewing back in position. Including cutting out her belly button and putting it back in place.

    SHOCK VALUE!

I cried, then went for an hour walk!

    OMG!

Please Please Please let BT work. I want my life back!

I thought hard about the lapband too and went into it fairly extensively, even looking at afew forums of people who have had it done. This decided me it was not for me (I couldn't afford it anyway) and I am glad. But for some folk it is worth it.

Re the loose skin, it is a tough one. SO far mine seems good and I credit this to the fact I am eating high fat, exercisiing nearly every day, and losing slowly - my aim is 20kgs this year and I have lost 10.5 (20.5 from the start in Aug 2011) so am right on track.

I couldn't affor the skin ops anyway and I don't know if I could bring myself to do it anyway. I have a very poor reaction to anaesthetics and avoid them assiduously!

Yes like I said I know a dear friend who had it done. She is glad she did it, but I saw what she had to go through. After the Op she was in out out of the Specialists getting the thing adjusted and she would be ill all the time until she got used to it all. Now she can eat solid foods but only mouthfulls at a time.

I admit if money was not the issue I prob would have done it. I am not having much success with any weight loss atm.

Seeing the Hormone spec next month hopefully can resulve some issues!

Re: the skin. Thankfully I do not think I will be too bad. I expect I may need a boob job? not sure but to stop and see it what someone else has done, it has been a motivator for me not to continue to get bigger and bigger. I am fat but not flabby fat (not to offend anyone) but you know what I mean.

Plus I have been thinner then bigger then thinner. 2003 I was a size 14-16 so that is my hope that my skin is not too damaged and that it will return to that size without too much drama.

I'm seriously going to need a skin job when I'm done losing weight, I already have a skin/fat flap/fold that hangs down probably 6" which will only get worse as the fat empties out.

I've already spoken to a plastic surgeon ... it's a big operation, large chance of infection and slow healing due to diabetes ... but I'm hoping, once the weight goes, so will that

First, though, I have to lose the weight

All the best for you Morte! I am expecting I will need some work done. But like you said the important thing is to get the weight off. Once it is off then we can do the tidy up.

I am hopeful that this knowlegde of what I have been doing to my body and what I have to look forward to if I do not change will keep me going.

Yeah I have MASSIVE boobies and I am expecting they will be dangling down to my knees when I get the kgs down.

My great aunt lost heaps of kgs and had the same body shape I do and she had to get hers fixed. So it is something I have already have in my mind to do.

If I need to do more I will.

But let me just get some off first.....
