Post Elimination - Fail Safe Diet

I am looking at doing this soon as I think Maya may be sensitive to some things, found some good pages on it for anyone interested. The lady who has a blog I really like has only just started this website so it is only in the early stages.

What is the Faile Safe Diet? (About the Diet)

Elimination Diet (Details of the actual diet and how to do the challenges)

I should also list this website here for anyone new: Fed Up With Food Additives This site has a huge amount of info on the effects of additives as well as the failsafe diet.

Re: Elimination - Fail Safe Diet

I have a few friends who have used her Elimination diet and found some major triggers in their children. They wished they had done it before school age as is was near on impossible to control their eating. I did one on my daughter but thanks to minunderstanding MIL, she botched the end part, but I did find a few big triggers like MSG and 282.
Have you red the book Additives Alert? http://www.additivealert.com.au/. Great book written by a Perth lady. Makes you VERY worried about just what we put down our gobbs!

Re: Elimination - Fail Safe Diet

I already avoid all that stuff thats the boggling part so what I am thinking now is if something less sinister is causing problems like natural salicytes or amines in whole foods. So I will have to cut out a lot of things and eat more potatoes and pulses and somehow make sure I get fresh meat under a week old which I am not sure how easy that will be. How fresh is meat you buy at a butcher generally?

Oh and ofcourse I can still have cheesecake I just have to figure out a way to flavour it. Maybe a cashew base and carob instead of chocolate, wonder if it would work.

Re: Elimination - Fail Safe Diet

Before starting Low carb I had allergy tests, but the spe******t said it was more food intolerance and gave me a lot of reading material to help find out what..I gave up in the end, but it looked like salicytes were the problem..
Here is a link with a lst of foods with salicytes

Re: Elimination - Fail Safe Diet

The book on additive tells you all the 'sneaky' undisclosed info that manufactures are allowed to use. Some of these include additives in most oils that they dont have to tell you about and a 5% rule that states as long as the part of the product that the addative is in, doesnt exceed 5% then they dont have to disclose it...eg, if a sauce or topping etc on the food makes less than 5% of it's content, they it can have anythinng in it and they dont have to tell you. She also explains the horrors about a lot of natural preservatives and colours, and how most fresh meat is always coated with chemical etc etc. It really sucks what we as consumers have to deal with!!!!!!

Brig with that book does she actually list which ones have undisclosed additives etc or which ones don't have that hidden crap in them?

Re: Elimination - Fail Safe Diet

I was reading up about the feingold diet (the first 50 pages are free) and here was a bit that struck a cord:

Quote:
"Laura was not always distracted and difficult. There were times when she was fine. When she was impossible, I never knew what I had done wrong, and when she was good, it was equally puzzling what I had done right! The only pattern that emerged was that she behaved better when she was sick. A bout with chicken pox produced an uncomfortable but calm and normal child. It never occurred to me that she wasn’t eating much when she was sick. I let her choose what she wanted to eat and for about three days her diet was primarily 7UP and granola. It was much later that I understood that she is chemically sensitive, and that food additives were affecting her behavior."
I remember when Maya had gastro over xmas and wasn't feeding much, she was like a different child and that was what prompted me to do give this try!

Re: Elimination - Fail Safe Diet

I do know of at least one trigger with Maggie, but I am not sure of what else. She is more quiet when sick, but I always assumed that was due to the sickness. Not sure I have the emotional energy to cut out every possible trigger at the moment.

Re: Elimination - Fail Safe Diet

I know what you mean, but I am at the stage where I am not very productive and I need a break. Got to do something, maybe it will help Garry too because I think that is where she is getting it from.

If it works then I will start to wean her which will probably be easier if shes more normal. Of course if it benefits me too then I might have to stay on it, we'll see.

Plus if it is successful with her then maybe Garry will accept it as a possibility.

Re: Elimination - Fail Safe Diet

Heres a couple more from this feingold book:

Quote:
"The Ages and Stages of ADD/ADHD

The chemically sensitive infant cries too much and sleeps too little.
He may not want to be held or cuddled, stiffening his little body in response to the affection you offer. Nothing pleases him. This little person dominates your family’s life. He screams with the volume turned up to the maximum, stops taking naps long before Dr. Spock predicted, and is difficult to get to sleep at night. He seems to need less sleep than you do!

Your chemically sensitive baby may seem to have difficulty tolerating certain foods, even breast milk, and may be prone to rashes. Perhaps you had advanced notice that your baby would be a handful. Some display overactive behavior even before birth."
Quote:
"All grown-up and still hyper

The symptoms change with adulthood, but they don’t go away. “Hyperactive” or chemically sensitive adults tend to be irritable, impatient, distractible, and likely to suffer from numerous physical problems. They may be compulsive, workaholic, or prone to interrupt.
There may be many lost jobs and failed relationships. They are also likely to be the parent of a hyperactive or ADD child."
Granted Garry hasn't lost any jobs but he has left many jobs for another.
