      Another positive news article on low carb, high fat diets, this time focusing on diabetes :)

      Accordingly, he proposed that all the patients in his practice who had been newly identified as having type 2, or "pre–", diabetes should adopt a high–fat diet. The results, published in the journal Practical Diabetes, are truly astonishing – an average weight loss of 9kg with a reduction in waist circumference from 120cm to 105cm. There was also a striking improvement in both their blood sugar levels, with only two still in the abnormal range. Seven patients were able to come off their medication.

      Their blood pressure also improved and the average cholesterol reading fell from 5.5 to 4.7 – seeming to disprove the persistent rhetoric of the past 20 years implicating "high–fat" foods as a cause of raised cholesterol

    • LCHF has enthusiastic devotees but I was prescribed "No major carbs and extra veg" and it works fine. When I can my specialist wants me to increase my carbs.

      The HF is superfluous if not dangerous.

      My suggestion is try No major carbs and extra veg before loading up with HF.

      The less radical your diet is, the less risk there will be of unforseen long term problems.

      No one really knows what the long term probs of LCHF is (10, 20, 30, 40, 50 years).

      The cave man diet is a con they did not live long enough for long term probs and they would have pigged out on anything seasonaly available, My mother is 96 and that would be 2 or 3 or 4 lifetimes for a caveman.
    • My doctor told me low carb is fine but also needs to be low fat.

      What a load of tripe that advise turned out to be - for me anyway.

      I recently switched to LCHF from LC because I was not loosing weight, it was just up and down but slowly creeping up over all. Since the change to LCHF I am still up and down but with the overall trend being slow weight loss. The other bonus I have found is the bones, joints dont ache and carry on so much. When I mentioned this to my spine aligner, she said

      "well der, years ago we ate fatty cuts of meat (mainly for financial reasons), but people had far less troubles with their joints (mobility) back then because their joints were better nourished, oiled through the meat fat".

      That makes sense to me. I must say I am not hungry on LCHF and I don't need to eat as much.

      I do at times wonder about the long term effects as mentioned by silversmith, however it is working for me and I do not have stomach pain like I did previously so I think I will stick with it.
    • Fat also is needed to absorb certain vitamins as well as helps to absorb others.

      It was years ago now and I have forgotten the specifics of the study now but there was one done in a European country where they did a study on children in a childcare centre or centres where they ate the "recommended" diet for children over a certain period of time. They found these children suffered significant nutrient deficiencies from having a diet too low in fat and too high in fibre.

      I wish I could remember enough so I could find this study!

      People seem to dismiss low carb high fat diets because they think people are eating sticks of butter it's not about that. Of course people are different and do better with different foods, some people like silversmith whom have had their gallbladder removed are unable to digest fat as well as they once did.

      You don't need to eat sticks of butter, it's all relative. The main point of it is is that you shouldn't be afraid of having butter, or fat on your meat, egg yolks etc as these can be good for you and satisfying. Reducing fat too much can leave you feeling cravey so whilst we are having less calories from fat we may make up for it and plus some by eating more low fat foods because we're hungry all the time.

      When really what it's all about is eating fresh foods and knocking those cravings and then finding what balance we feel best on as an individual so that we can maintain what we're trying to achieve.

    • That sound interesting. I really does make you wonder about the credibility of these nutritionists and dietitians, as (I think) silversmith alluded to.

      There is nothing better than the taste of the full fat products compared to low fat. I love cooking with butter or olive oil but to Sherrie's point no one is going to enjoy eating a stick of butter for fun! It'about flavor, food enjoyment and good health for me.

      Have you noticed the low fat products are ALWAYS higher in carbs!! That's not scientific.
